My word for today is hope and I immediately went in my mind to Isaiah, when the hope of the Messiah is foretold;

“A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse;
from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.
The Sprit of the Lord will rest on him-
The Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
The Spirit of counsel and of might,
The Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord.”
Isaiah 11:1-2

Then Paul reminds us again in Romans 15:12:

“And again, Isaiah says, “The Root of Jesse will spring up, one who will arise to rule over nations; in him the Gentiles will hope.”

And Jesus, Messiah, confirms in Revelation 22:16:

“I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things for the churches I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.”

I was bound and determined to find a stump to photograph today, preferably a stump, with a shoot bearing a bud or leaf (new life). The past few years for me personally have left me feeling like a rough-hewn stump, a jagged and cracked veneer with life and hope brimming beneath the surface. After passing several moss-covered stumps, this one appeared. Tears began to pool in my eyes and spill down my cheeks. From this stump, a vision of my ransom appeared… a cross. The symbol of my ultimate #hope.

As we begin Advent, let’s allow God to stir in our hearts as we await the gift of new life, eternal life that is coming.

November 30: Titus 3:4-7

Titus-3-4-5

My favorite ballgame to watch is the one I know my team wins.  I love to watch movies that I know have a happy ending.  You may say, “Page where is the fun in that you already know the outcome.”  For me there is peace and security in knowing the ending is good.

God knew because we were human we would fail and need a redemption plan in order to have a happily ever after.  Our reading today shares God’s answer.

Titus 3:4-7:  “But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared,  he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”

That may seem very deep to you, but what it is saying is that God knew sending Jesus was the only answer to our fallen state. We could never be good enough, religious enough, smart enough, wise enough. According to the Bible even our most righteous acts are dirty rags.  We needed someone who could pay for our wrongs since we could not do it ourselves. Because of what Jesus did through being born a human who lived a perfect life and giving himself to be crucified for our wrongs, we can be washed clean.  Not only that He sent a Helper, the Holy Spirit, that resides in the heart of all believers.

This Christmas season you will probably open one or many gifts, but none will compare with the gift God gave us through His Son Jesus.  That is why we celebrate!!  That is why His birth is such a big deal.  That is why Christmas is so much more than trees, lights, songs, sweets, and even family.  We use all of these things to remind us of the true Gift!

Stephanie Thompson from Louisville writes:

“I’ve been thinking tonight about the beginning of the advent season and the hope that it brings with it, this “settled certainty” that its already been done. I wanted to share this song because I think it says it so beautifully, the work of the Father, revealed in the Son….”

Advent 2015

john-146_4825_1600x1200

A year ago we were anticipating the birth of our second grand child Haddon. I remember waking every day checking on his mom, Lacey and asking how she was feeling. We just knew it would be any minute! As we anticipated the arrival we tried to make preparations. Lacey and Les prepared the room for our new arrival. We gathered boy clothes since our first grandchild had been a girl. Then we just waited. I wonder if that is how Mary and Joseph felt? Waiting…

The celebration of Advent is just that, the celebration of the arrival of the Messiah. During the month preceding Christmas day scriptures are read and prayers are offered as we prepare our hearts to celebrate what God did by sending His Son
Today’s Passage is John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” It is tempting to make gift buying and even fun things like elves or Santa the focus the closer you get to Christmas Day. You may even feel pressure to be perfect in decorating, hosting, or any number of outside pressures. Don’t allow these things to move your focus from the main person of Christmas. He is The Way, The Truth and The Life. He is our only ticket to Eternal life with the Father.
As we wait expectedly for Christmas I invite you to interact with me. Please comment on the scriptures we post or leave a thought, a favorite recipe or craft. Join in the celebration. This is intended to help us keep our focus on Jesus not the pressures that sometimes accompany the Christmas Holiday. It is His birthday and we want to highlight Him!

Commit today to spending time daily focusing on His word and a few minutes in prayer. You may even want to throw in a carol or two.

Mary Did You Know :

(This is the couple that own The Barn at Shady Lane where Gene’ and Zach were married. (Two on the left) They nail Mary Did You Know!)

Our Baby is Married

12289526_645486735555120_6066127941056284077_nA week ago today we were sitting in a cool light wind brushed with sunshine as my husband walked our only daughter down the aisle. We had worked so hard to get everything done. I say we because God poured out His love on our family through friends we have invested our life in. Friends decorated beautifully with maps, globes, old suitcases, lace, candles, fresh flowers and so much more. Another set of friends prepared the food. There were vegetables, fruit, cheese, trail mix as a take home gift and so much more. The cakes were amazing made by yet another precious friend. I cannot imagine anything being more beautiful than the Barn at Shady Lane that was anything but a place for animals. Even it was a gift from God to us as it was open to be used that day and our friends, the owners, were gracious in every way. At the end of the wonderful day precious friends also helped clean up until everything was in a vehicle and headed back to its specific place. We came away exhausted but absolutely blown away by God’s goodness through our friends and family.
Gene’ was a beautiful bride! I can’t imagine anything more precious than both of her grandfathers, her three brothers and her dad doing the ceremony! Each had words of encouragement and challenge for Gene’ and Zach. There were many laughs and even a few tears as each challenge the couple to live a life and a marriage that looks like Christ and the Church.12310036_645487985554995_7975740931552138529_o
The point at which the day really dawned on me was when they spoke their vows and exchanged the simple gold bands. At that point it was like “wow, this is really happening.” When Les got choked up telling Zach he now would be her protector and provider, we all wiped tears! To give his daughter away was one of the hardest things he has ever done! Zach must be a special man for God to have chosen him for Gene’.
Now that I have caught my breath and rested some I still feel the way I did Sunday evening. We have already had Thanksgiving. Last Saturday and Sunday as our family and friends poured out their love on us through serving us we thanked God over and over and over! At the end of the day we just kept calling out to God the names of person after person who had blessed us by their service and their presence that day.
Thank you to everyone of you. We will be forever grateful!

Joy, Laughter and a Light Heart

I love when it is time to decorate for Christmas. I have often wondered what was wrong with me lol that I should love it so much. I have pondered what it is about the decorations and just this time of year that I love. I think it is just the light heartedness and really just the playfulness. I LOVE the lights!!!! Jesus is the Light of the World and every tiny sparkling light makes me think of Him and HIS BIRTHDAY!!! After Halloween that is so dark to be able to decorate with brightness and hope makes me thrill with joy!!! I also love the whimsicalness of music and Hallmark movies that always have a happy ever after ending. I love having reminders all over my house of Jesus’s first birthday party with Shepherds. I also include the wise men though they weren’t there at the first party. Jesus’ family may have been like mine who just loved having friends over. 🙂 The playfulness of the season makes me smile and want others to join in the fun!!!! Whether it is dancing around to the fun music or eating way too much sugar it all screams come play with me!!!
If you have lost your joy for this season I challenge you to go back and remember who it is really all about. Jesus, God’s Son sent to this world for you and me. It is a celebration of Him and His life! If that isn’t enough go watch children as they play. See their joy as they talk about Christmas. Oh for Pete’s sake go grab some lights and throw around a little evergreen and enjoy the smell and glow. Jesus is life everlasting and He is light! If all else fails, go to Walmart, buy some divinity and come home to a fire in the fireplace and Christmas movie or soft music playing. Just have fun and ask the Father to return to you the Joy of what He has done in saving you!

Heavenly Luau

Are you ready for some fun?  Why not plan a Heavenly Luau.  Here are some ideas.  Make it your own.

Invitation : Plane tickets were too expensive

And the time was just not there

To fly us to Hawaii and see the

Beautiful paradise there.

But home will have to do this time

With decorations not as fair

Come join us for a luau

Food, Fun, and laughter we will share.

Decorations: Anything tropical or beach like. Palm trees, flowers, leis, surf boards, beach towels, sea shells, fish net, fresh fruit, fresh flowers, Hawaiian music, small umbrellas for drinks.

Refreshments: Roast a pig if you are one who goes “whole hog”. For the rest of us cold ham slices, pulled pork sandwiches, or sausage on the grill may be a good substitute. Pigs in a blanket (bite size sausage wrapped in small portions of canned biscuits) can be fun as well.

A cascade of fruit that is able to be picked up by fingers is good. The original luau did not include utensils and everything was eaten by hand, so finger tuna sandwiches, cheese kabobs and crackers or whatever makes you think of the tropical islands would be great. We served fruit juice smoothies as our beverage. These are easily made by choosing your favorite fruit juices combined with equal part of ice and blend until smooth. You can get much fancier by throwing in fresh fruit of your choice to vary the taste. Serve in fun glasses with an umbrella.

Just For Fun: have a friend who has been to Hawaii and taken hula lessons to teach the hula. It doesn’t matter if they make up their own motions, just have fun moving to the music. If you don’t have a resource

Devotion: “Aloha” If you have ever traveled to Hawaii or even studied about it you have heart this word. In days of old the Hawaiian people would greet each other forehead to forehead with the greeting “Aloha”. According to tradition they would be so close they could feel the breath of the other. This was a show of trust and affection. God desires this close relationship with us as well. He longs for us to be so close to Him that we can feel His presence. The bible says, “Draw near to Him and He will draw near to us.” I pray that you will feel God’s “Aloha” to you.

Take home favor: Chocolate covered macadamia nuts with a note that says, “Taste and see that the Lord is good.”

Heading Home

Heading home today. Thankful for all God has taught us. Grateful to soon be home with Les. Please pray for Gene’. It will be a hard day. She loves her life here and has made home. She sees the excitement of the days to come, but mourns the loss of what is family, friends and the familiar here. Also pray for the children of the missionaries. They have found Gene’ to be a close friend and life line. They will need extra prayers for God to send someone who will be here long term to be there for them as a young adult mentor. I love that Gene’ has written each of them encouraging them. My heart hurts for them as one more person leaves their lives for a while. Much to rejoice over, but much to pray for as well.

Preparing to Leave

How do you pack a year of your life into 2 suitcases? If you answered by leaving much behind you are exactly right. I have loved my daughter’s heart as she leaves things behind thinking of the next person who will occupy her space. She has left medicines in case they get sick, a Tide stain remover knowing they will need to be on the go, and candles for the days when the electricity goes out as well as many other things to make this flat a home. Her heart of mercy pleases this momma to no end.

Today was not a wasted day of ministry either as she completed several projects. Even Ruth got to paint with her. I on the other hand did what any mom would do. I deep cleaned her flat, moving beds and furniture to prepare the room for the next missionary who will come in the next couple of days. Even now there is another mother hoping her daughter or son will have everything they need.

In the morning we will clean out the refrigerator and deliver many odds and ends. We will have lunch at Gene’s favorite eatery then prepare to go to the airport. We leave knowing it is only a matter of time until we come back. The best really is yet to come!!!!! I can’t wait to bring some of you guys with us to love many wonderful children and adults! Get ready there is much to do.

Care Point at the Mountains

What a great day of ministry again. We drove to a care point about 2 hours away in the mountains. The views were breathtakingly beautiful. You know it is high when your ears are popping as you go up and down the mountains. The first half of the trip was on black top, or on tar as they say here in Swazi. The second half was on a bumpy, twisty, dusty unpaved road. We were stopped by a parade of cows and had to wait our turn as they processed down the way. We even stopped dead in the center of the road at one point and took a beautiful picture of the country side and not one vehicle was in sight. The most beautiful sight of all was a small care point in the middle of nowhere that had children running and playing around it. We interrupted a little boys’ soccer game to get into the fenced in area. They forgave us and resumed their play. We gather inside the small building there with 3 women who cook 7 days a week for 350 children.

The care point has a church that is affiliated with it. The pastor and his wife are from a neighboring African country and have felt called to Swaziland to be missionaries. They have faced many spiritual battles as they have served at the care point. We were so blessed to share time in God’s word with the ladies. Ruth shared from Jeremiah 29:11-13. She reminded each lady that God had a purpose for her life. Though we may not feel what we are doing is very important and may even be tired and struggling at times. God is doing a great work through each of us. The ladies were greatly encouraged by God’s word. One of the sweetest parts of our visit was when the ladies sang about God’s worthiness. Instruments were not needed. The sweet tones of their voices made beautiful music. I know the Father was very pleased. We ended our time with the ladies by praying for them and asking God to strengthen them as they serve. We turned around for the 2 hour trip home but it seemed much shorter as we remembered the sweet time in the Lord we had just experienced.

Jeremiah 29:11-13  11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.

Encouraging the Local Staff

To borrow a phrase from my mother, “My tail feathers are dragging.” Lol For those who don’t speak southern, that means I am tired.

We fed what seemed like the 5000 today. We started the morning feeding the Swazi national staff. We took donuts and fresh fruit to their team meeting. This was only their second week in their new team house, so we brought the pens, pencils and plastic bags that we had collected to the staff to help stock their office pantry. Then we were off to take material to the Timbali Crafts ladies. We helped inspect the bags each woman had made for quality control. Some of you should be dying out laughing because neither Ruth, Gene’ nor I are seamstresses, but we are now proficient at determining whether the seam is straight and even on both sides of the bag. lol

Then we provided what the ladies call “chicken dust” for lunch. It is really a half of a grilled chicken, salad and a heavy white corn that looks like grits but is called pap. The ladies did a dance when they heard we were bringing the chicken. I also had the privilege of sharing a devotion time with the ladies. I encouraged each woman with James 5:16 to pray for the woman that will carry the bag she works on each time she sews. I asked them to pray for the lady’s salvation and for her walk with the Lord. I also told them of the wonderful women who have bought their bags that I know and how our ladies go on the internet to see the face of the woman who made her bag. They were so thankful for the prayers each lady had prayed for them.

Our afternoon concluded with Gene’ teaching a group of the Swazi staff ladies to learn how to paint. Each lady feasted on Cajun chicken and rice and then painted a beautiful abstract of a tree. The girls were very excited and impressed with themselves to see that they could create something of great beauty.

Though there are 6000 children who come to the care points daily to be fed there are relatively few adults who make it possible. Today we touched the lives of the adults who give daily to the care and provision of these children. To be able to give to them whether physically or even emotionally by speaking words of affirmation and praise was such a privilege and joy. In a couple of days we will go back to the States, but these staff members will dive back in to serving tirelessly. I am grateful today that we were able to give to the givers in Jesus name.

Please pray for them and for us as we go in the morning to another care point and minister to another group of people who need fresh hope and encouragement.

Thank you again for praying.

James 5:16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.
