Proverbs 5-8: It is as though Solomon was writing for our time and culture. He warns the men to chase wisdom not the folly of fleshly desires. Solomon gives an entire chapter to the foolishness of chasing the adulterous woman. He reminds the reader that her speech may be alluring, but it comes with a venomous bite and the short time of pleasure is not worth the lifetime of shame. What a great reminder in our day as well.
The enemy tries to make sex and extramarital affairs seem so alluring and good. You see it all over our “entertainment”. The hunt for love when what you have is not enough. Oh how I wish they presented the reality of broken relationships, abandoned children, financial destruction and so many other real life consequences of seeking someone other than the one you have made a commitment to for a lifetime.
It is so hard to tell someone who is in a fog of folly that their decisions may seem to make you “happy” at the minute but will cause a lifetime of chaos. Solomon puts it like this:
6:32 He who commits adultery lacks sense;
he who does it destroys himself.
33 He will get wounds and dishonor,
and his disgrace will not be wiped away.
I am praying today for those of you who have been hurt by the choices of others. I pray that God will heal your broken heart and take care of your needs. I also pray for those who left their commitment to you and to God. I pray they will confess their sin and be made right with God. I pray they will leave their folly and become people after His heart again. I pray for your children that even in the midst of the chaos they will know the strong love of their Heavenly Father and their parents.
