John 1:29-34
Have you ever read through the Old Testament book of Leviticus? It describes the sin offering, the peace offerings, the other offerings that almost all required the death and blood of an animal. It describes everything from the offender placing his hands on the animal’s head to acknowledge sin to the actual burning of specific pieces of the animal and its fat. It describes how the priest was to take some of the blood of the animal and splash it on the altar as they asked God to forgive the sin of the people. After a reading Leviticus for a few days I get overwhelmed and thank God I was not alive then. I would have needed a huge herd of animals to pay for my sin.
Jesus was the ultimate sacrifice. His body and blood satisfied the wrath of God toward sin for eternity. It goes back to our devotion from day 1. Jesus was the plan from the beginning. He came knowing only His death and resurrection would satisfy the need of a perfect sacrifice once for all.
In December we visited Israel and a part of our tour took us to Bethlehem. We toured the cave area where it is believed Jesus took his first breaths as well as the shepherds fields where the good news was made known. Our guide explained that Jesus was placed into a makeshift bed made from the trough animals would have eaten from. They talked about the wraps He was swaddled in suggesting the possibility that the wraps could have come from Elizabeth. If you go back and read the gospel account when Mary found out she was expecting Jesus she went to see her cousin Elizabeth who had her own miraculous story of bearing a child. Elizabeth’s son John would be a forerunner of Jesus. The cloth could have been from garments worn by Zechariah, Elizabeth’s husband who served as a priest. He had been offering sacrifices as described in Leviticus before the Lord when God had told him that Elizabeth would have a son and that he “Will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. And he will go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the disobedient to the understanding of the righteous, to make ready for the Lord a prepared people.” Luke 1:16-17 The guide talked about how the lambs in the fields where the shepherds were probably kept lambs that would one day be used as sacrifices at the Temple. These lambs were wrapped with the cloths to prevent them from being scraped or injured. The guide reminded us that Jesus like those lambs was being prepared to one day be The Sacrifice. Only a perfect lamb could be used for sacrifice. John was right when he said, “Here is the Lamb of God, who take away the sin of the world!” John 1:29 John knew from his experience as the son of the priest the importance of that sacrifice. He also knew and made known that Jesus was The Son of God.
Thank God today that you too are on this side of the Cross. Thank Jesus for what He did to pay for your sin. Confess any known sin and make it your purpose today to tell someone today about the difference Jesus has made in your life. John said it best when he said “He must increase and I must decrease.” When we make much of Jesus and less of us we are following the example John set for us.

It tells of the day that Satan will be thrown in the pit for eternity and that will be a good thing because it will be the end of death and suffering, it will be sad too. Here is how Revelation 20 puts it.

14Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

My heart can’t imagine the sadness of so many who did not receive Jesus as Savior being thrown into that lake of fire as well. That is why from now until the day that Jesus returns or I am called Home my purpose in life is to take as many people as possible to heaven with me.

Won’t you join me? If you have never called on the name of the Lord for salvation don’t delay. You never know when it could be too late. If you have questions about your salvation, don’t be afraid to ask. We long for you to know for sure where you will spend eternity.

If you are a believer in Jesus and have trusted Him as Savior, don’t delay in sharing the hope that is in you. He is the only way to heaven and thus to escape the lake of fire. You and I are charged to Go and make disciples teaching them to obey all that Jesus has taught us. He is with us will help us share if we ask. Our purpose of 2018 doesn’t change. Share the gospel and make Him known. Someone’s eternity depends on it.

1 John 4:1-6: I love watching a winning college football team. I graduated from a school that wins often, but my children graduated from Alabama. Having invested much money there it is not unusual for me to pull for Bama on any given Saturday. It also helps that they are usually winning. lol. When I think about ball teams that have a long winning tradition, it seems as though they expect to always win. Even in games where they are behind to the very end they find a way of winning because their mindset is that of a winner. They Expect to win!
As a believer we too are winners. Listen to how 1 John puts it

4 “Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.”

We are winners not because of our own perfection or even our own mindset. We are winners because of who indwells us! the Bible tells us that we are the temple of the Holy Spirit. He abides in us. He teaches us truth. He guides and directs. He comforts and encourages. He convicts us of sin. We have the winner inside of us, because through the resurrection God defeated sin and death. Therefore we can walk with confidence and purpose. We will overcome! Glory to God! No weapon formed against you will win. The devil has already been defeated. WE just need to follow the leader within us. I am a champion in God’s Army!

Even as I write I can hear the voices of the children in Swaziland as they sing, “I am a winner in God’s army.” Yes little ones you are and so am I.

They sounded like school children bantering back and forth.

2 “Should a wise man answer with windy knowledge”,
3 “Should he argue in unprofitable talk,
or in words with which he can do no good?”

On and on this “friend” of Job laid into him telling him that the bad things that had happened was because of his reluctance to admit his sin. How sad it is when we are believers hurt each other with our tongues even when we justify it by saying we are helping them. There is constructive conversation that can help others, but it is always done in love, not anger or hurt. It attacks the problem never the person. It leads them back to the Lover of their Soul even when they don’t want to face Him. Our conversation should be filled with kindness, gentleness, and spoken under control.

When encouraging someone who has left the path remember they may not even see where they are wandering far away. The best thing to do is pray first. Pray for their eyes to be opened. Pray for the right timing to speak. Pray for the right words when the time is right. Pray for a receptive heart when the words are said. Pray for desire to stick with their commitment when they do make needed change. Pray that their strongholds will fall and they will be ready to come back into the fold.

Until they do, hold your words carefully and release any hateful words spoken by others. Sometimes the older we get words are the only weapon we have to fight with and some use them carelessly. Don’t let their hurtful words hold. you captive. Forgive as you would want to be forgiven.
